Kate Chabriere, founder: I have been vegetarian since the age of 11 and vegan since 2007. Having lived in Thailand, France and on the moors of Cornwall since being vegan, I am used to having to ‘veganise’ my surroundings!
I moved to Harrogate in 2013 and was initially quite disappointed with the lack of ‘vegan’ presence (the only veggie restaurant having just closed) but slowly we are encouraging places to cater for us and I am slowly meeting more vegans here! I am a languages tutor and Education Officer for Moroccan Primate Conservation. I love salsa dancing, cooking and walking my rescue dog Molly!
The Vegan Punk, web tech: A long term vegetarian, I went vegan four and a half years ago. I work in digital marketing and in my spare time I enjoy exploring the Yorkshire countryside, watching live rock music, and spending time with my family, friends and cat Betty. Now resident in Leeds, I help out with the HAPPI website. You can find my blog at theveganpunk.com.
Gemma, founder member: As a vegan for three years, I’m now finding that it’s getting easier in Harrogate as more places are offering vegan options. I’ve met lots of people through HAPPI and no longer feel like the ‘only vegan in town’, which can be hard. My hobbies include painting and drawing, reading, watching documentaries and visiting new places. I first met Kate by coincidence on the train going to the Manchester Vegan Fair!
Lydia, founder member: I have been vegan now 7-8 years and was veggie around 3 years before that. I spent a lot of years feeling like the only vegan in Harrogate and feeling pretty misunderstood, so now that HAPPI is around I’m able to meet people in my area with the same beliefs and passions. My hobbies include roller derby (as referee), collecting anything from the ’50s and weightlifting – I’m taking part in my first strength competition soon!
